I’m going to go out on a limb and say that “Market” in the Shangri-La Hotel in Vancouver is the best lunch deal I have found in any my travels. You have three options for lunch: McDonalds, Earls/Cactus Club/High end restaurant. I normally fall somewhere in the middle happy to pay $20-$25 for lunch if it is good and filling. I went to Market last week and had not only a high-end, three course meal, but I paid $29.00 for it. I think it was woth at least $45 and if you know me, you know I like a deal. When I looked at the menu, I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to try and was already planning follow up trips to try other things. On this visit, I had:
- The best Manhattan I’ve ever had as a cocktail
- First Course: Crispy Calamari with a beautiful chili dip (actually a foam)
- Second Course: Seared Hanger Steak with Gingered Mushrooms and a soy caramel sauce
- Dessert Course: Green Apple Crisp with Cinnamon Ice Cream
I can say it was one of the best values I’ve had, I put it directly behind Ramsay’s Claridges (UK) for quality of product, technical application, and taste, and I will champion this restaurant as long as it keeps these standards.
On the next visit, I’ll have the Black Truffle and Fontina Cheese Pizza, the Soy Glazed Short Ribs with Apple-Jalapeno Puree, and the Chocolate Pudding. If you want to see what Vancouver should be aspiring to, go here for lunch. Here is the menu. Tell them Hanging Pig sent you!
Cheers,
